How to market yourself as a starting freelancer?
It can feel like a lot, right? Next to all the administrative things you need to get in order to become a freelancer, as a budding freelancer you also need to think about how you want to market yourself. Phew, not an easy task. Not to worry! We give you some tips on what to think about when the time has come to get started. Let’s have a look.
First things first, think about it
Some of the best action plans are executed without further ado, but let’s give your career some more thought, right? Take your time to consider what you are good at, which projects pique your interest, what you absolutely don’t want to do (just as important), how much you want to work, and so on. By getting this sorted out first, it will be easier later to look for projects in a targeted way and start talking to potential clients. What’s more, you’ll know how to position yourself. If you’re looking for something fast-paced, for instance, it helps to showcase your experience in such a way of working. Or if you’re very good at a particular technology and wish to work with it more, let people know how passionate you are about it. Do you have a portfolio? Great, you could show it to the world!
Enough thinking, more doing
Once you have decided for yourself what you are looking for, it is important to start communicating that you are a freelancer, since no one but yourself is aware at this point. This is where we start to market you properly.
Tell people clearly:
- What your skills are (dive into your education, your previous experience …)
- What you excel at or are unique in (how are you different from all of those other freelancers? Think of hobbies, ways of working …)
- What you’re passionate about (what do you do in your spare time, what are things you go the extra mile for …)
- Which kind of projects you’re looking for (don’t forget to mention specific technologies or sectors if that’s what you’re interested in!)
- What type of person you are (it helps to attract the right tribe with your vibe.)
It is best to do this as consistently as possible, ergo with the same message on your CV, on LinkedIn, on your website if you’ve got one, in client interviews and so on. If you need any tips for a good CV, head this way for some excellent pointers.
Want work? Network!
Did you know that research shows that personal networks have become the new job sites? More and more (young) talent explores their own network(s) to hunt for a new opportunity. So, if you don’t have one yet, create a network. Both offline and online. As a freelancer, people need to know who you are, where you are, and what you can and like to do. That’s why networking is a good time investment; it can help you get projects for the future.
Conclusion
If this blog wishes to help you understand one thing it’s this: to market yourself, it’s best to really showcase who you are. Obviously, your first goal is to get a job, period. However, it’s always nicer to work somewhere you’re truly inspired daily. Same goes for clients: they’d rather have someone embark their business that fits and understands it, than someone run-of-the-mill. Don’t be afraid to show your true colours when you position yourself, we’re sure it’ll help you get started on this exciting adventure called freelancing! Still have questions left?
